Dear Friends,

In our community babies are spending a whole day in a single diaper because their parents have to choose between paying for diapers, food, rent, or heat.

I learned this as a social worker supervising the development of early intervention services for low-income young families. Our workers would help parents put together plans for work or school, only to have the plans trashed by having no disposable diapers to leave with their child’s day care provider.

No Diapers=No Daycare=No Work or School

And no public assistance program covers the cost of diapers - and the poor pay more: without transportation, parents cannot go to “big box” stores and have to pay almost twice the price at local convenience stores.

As president of the Anshe Emeth Community Development Corporation of Central New Jersey I saw an avenue where a non-profit could fill the gaps public programs could not. In 2010 we added the Diaper Bank to our free programs for low-income families, and it has since become our largest program, providing almost 15,000 diapers a month.

It is a busy and exciting time for our Central Jersey Diaper Bank, and we welcome support of all kinds to meet the increasing needs we see. Donations of diapers (for babies and adults), including opened packages, are welcome and we have simple guidelines for running a diaper drive. Donations of funds also go to the purchase of other items needed by families, like car seats.

The great news is that together this can be a basic needs problem we address. Please join us as we help keep babies in our community healthy.
